Abstrakt/Abstract

In the 1990s, the suburban areas of post-socialist cities were transformed dramatically. Prague could be presented as an example of the kind of urban development occurring in an East Central European city. This paper focuses on the suburbanisation process in the Prague urban region. The main emphasis is put on describing the suburbanisation of Prague as the process having the most important impact on the socio-spatial structure of suburban localities and on the transformation of both the social and physical environment of the outskirts of the city over the past twelve years. This article focuses on three main topics: theoretical approaches to the study of suburbanisation, the history of suburbanisation in Prague (with emphasis on the communist period) and the present consequences of suburbanisation in selected suburbs.
